Psychological First Aid

Psychological First Aid is an evidence-informed modular approach to help individuals and communities in the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event, whether it be a natural disaster or social crisis. To address the mental health needs of survivors of large-scale disasters, psychological first aid is used to provide immediate, palliative mental health assistance to survivors of disasters. The National Institute of Mental Health was instrumental in creating and propagating this innovative mental health protocol that reduces the initial distress to foster short- and long-term adaptive functioning and coping. Psychological First Aid establishes the safety of the client, reduces stress-related symptoms, provides rest and physical recuperation, and links the client to critical resources and social support systems. Psychological First Aid is a key component for many crisis response protocols because it focuses on immediate relief and stabilization. It is a first-order intervention that can later evolve into a second-order intervention such as therapy with a licensed counselor.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

In addition to Psychological First Aid, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is another way to stabilize survivors after a traumatic event. EMDR is a therapeutic intervention that successfully integrates various traumatic experiences into a coherent narrative. EMDR can be a useful strategy to deal with troublesome memories and make progress quickly in an attempt to provide relief. EMDR is a rapid, safe, and proven treatment for trauma and stress. This effective, evidence-based treatment has helped a multitude of people all over the world safely and rapidly process their traumas so they can move forward in their lives.  I am a certified EMDR clinician, and I am thrilled to offer both in-person and virtual sessions. Therefore, no matter where you are located in the world, I can assist you.

Mindfulness Techniques and Somatic-Based Practices

I offer strategies and empirically-supported treatments to manage crisis, trauma, and loss. I present mindfulness techniques and somatic-based practices for you to add to your personal mental health toolbox. I seek to empower you to know and employ practical solutions and tools to manage personal crisis and trauma. Increasing evidence indicates that mindfulness and somatic-based practices are possibly the future for successfully healing a person holistically in addressing trauma and stress disorders. The strategies and treatments I offer support your emotional, physical, and mental well-being and have been proven to radically improve a traumatized client’s suffering and impaired quality of life.

Workshops and Seminars

Additionally, I specialize in trauma response programming for groups. Through a trauma-informed approach, I design and conduct workshops and seminars domestically and internationally for corporate and nonprofit clients. I have researched, designed, and implemented cross-cultural therapeutic art and movement programs for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Iraq, Syrian refugees in Turkey, and Burundian, Sudanese, Syrian, and Iraqi refugees living in the United States.
